Every night, the Fox Reality Channel is re-running the entire season of American Idol Season 7, up until the start of Season 8 on Tuesday. Tonight’s episodes featured Top 9, Dolly Parton week.

I have one thing to say before I add a few thoughts in a bit… Simon desperately needed to lose that stick he had shoved up his ass.

And another thing. WTF is up with FOX and the relentless “male enhancement” commercials?

Idol Countdown: Day 8

If you have been living under a rock recently, you may not have heard about the “tweaks” coming to Idol this season. The following are eight changes that Idol is making this season. I have already talked about a few of them, but here is the summary:

1. New judge Kara DioGuardi - aka, sanity, and a vocabulary beyond “my dawgs” comes to the judges panel.

2. The Wildcard returns! The Wildcard returns!

3. There will be a top 36 rather than a top 24. Supposedly, there will be three groups of 12. It is not clear yet how they will be forming the top 12 from these groups, but I have my money on the top 3 from each group of 12, plus three from the Wildcard (A judges pick, a producers pick, and a popular vote pick? Or maybe a Clive Davis pick? He hasn’t done much lately.) This is all speculation beyond the three groups, of course.

4. Idol Gives Back will not be giving back this year. This has been changes to a bi-yearly event.

5. The auditions will be toned down and streamlined. Praise the Lord!

6. Hollywood week will be given more than one episode of face time! Another fabulous decision, if I do say so myself.

7. There will be a 50 years of Mowtown week! Not that this is really a tweak, but it is a throwback to seasons 1-3.

8. And finally Paula’s meds will be adjusted to put her in a happy place. Fine, that is just wishful thinking on my part, but a girl can dream, right?

Spoiler Update: Brent Kevin Smith Rumored Top 50

Joesplace, that ever-so-accurate Idol spoiler, just added a new name to her list of rumored AI Season 8 Top 5o contestants. His name is Brent Kevin Smith, and he’s the only guy in this AI commercial (along with Alexea Lawson, Lil Rounds and Emily Wynne-Hughes).

JP thinks it’s this guy, who goes by the name Brent Kevin, and after running some Google searches, I’m pretty sure it’s him.

Here’s Brent Kevin’s MySpace. He took off all of his music and videos back in November right after the Hollywood round ended. He explains in a blog dated 11/22, with the title: “This is what’s going on with my page”:

I’m posting this blog just in case you’re wondering what has happened to my page in the last few days. I recently reacquired the rights to brentkeith.com after a long period of trying to do just that. As I make the decisions about what I will be putting on each site, I’ve decided to take all of my videos, songs, and pics off of my Myspace profile. I promise to send out a bulletin and a general “heads-up” when I get everything up and running again.

Meanwhile, his website is parked. It hasn’t been touched.

Brent Kevin, was a contestant on Nashville Star 2, Here’s an about.com page, he had a song on the Dale soundtrack (a movie about the late race car driver, Dale Earnhardt Sr.–here’s the video)

Here’s an amateur video of a performance HERE. Here’s his CMT music page. He’s already got a fan base. Heh.

The snip on the AI commercial sounds more rock than country, but he does list classic rock influences on his My Space page.

This CMT article, posted in September 2007, had him going into the studio soon after. Of course, if he’s an AI contestant, he can’t currently have a record contract.

He’s got a lot of experience under his belt, and connections in the industry, therefore, some will call him planty!

So, kids, what do you think?

Idol Billboard Update for Issue 1/17/09 - January
Doldrums Set In

The January doldums have set in for the retail music business. Except for the last of the iTunes gift card bonanza, sales were typically slow this week. According to Billboard, album units are down 55% from last week, and 14% from the same week last year.

As an update to the HDD numbers I posted earlier in the week, here are the final Soundcan numbers for David Cook and David Archuleta, organized by numbers goddess, Kirsten. The final numbers are pretty much in the same ballpark as HDD. The percentage decreases are a bit worse than Kirsten’s original estimate:

A few highlights from the Billboard chart:

Elliott Yamin’s holiday album My Kind Of Holiday debuted on the Top Independent Albums chart at #26.
Speaking of the holidays, seasonal tunes are all but gone from the charts, allowing songs that were bumped off the charts to re-enter: “Telluride”, Josh Gracin at #45 on Hot Country Songs, “One Step at at Time”, Jordin Sparks at #20 on Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks, Hot Adult Contemporary Recurrents are back, with “No Air”, Jordin Sparks re-entering at #7, “Home”, Daughtry at #8, “Tattoo”, Jordin Sparks at #18 and “Breakaway”, Kelly Clarkson at #20.
David Archuleta’s “Crush” re-enters the Hot 100 Airplay at #69.
David Cook’s “Time of My Life” remains in the #1 position on the Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks chart. Cook is the only male artist to dominate the AC chart in the last 54 weeks.

Kara DioGuardi admits it wasn't easy joining American Idol as the show's fourth judge.

"It was a little unnerving," the songwriter told reporters during a press call Thursday. "I didn't know where I was going to sit and when I was going to speak."

However, DioGuardi said she's slowly finding where she fits among Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson.

"I would say that Paula has a lot of heart. I would say that Simon pretty much tells it like it is. Sometimes he can be pretty harsh, but he's usually right," she said. "And Randy? He's the diplomat."

As for Kara?

"I don't mince words, but I do have a heart."
