Idol gave back last night . . .

. . . Tonight it gives a smackdown to someone's dreams.

With eight singers left, there will be seven people advancing and one person having their dreams crushed on national television. I hope the group sing tonight is better than last night's. Rent is one of my favourite musicals and if you're going to sing its opening song, you have to do it right.

This year's singers have been notoriously bad in the group sings. Jason and David C. try to hamm it up a little too much. Amanda appeared to openly despise them. I understand that the chemistry between this crowd and other seasons may not be as good as people would like, but it seems to me that the singers should at least be trying. I don't think this is a portent of good things to come on the tour.

In other news, for the first time, it cost me more than $40 to fill up my car. I know that some people (like those who drive big trucks, SUVs and crossovers) probably haven't filled up in a while since Visa won't let you charge more than $50 a pop at a gas station ($75 for MasterCard), but for me it was a little startling to be putting 12 gallons of gas in a car and having it cost $41.50.

My old Honda Prelude used to take 11 gallons, cost me about $10 (in 1996) and ran for 350 miles. My Olds Alero now takes 12 gallons (from when the fuel light comes on, costs me over $40 and runs for 260 miles. [sarcasm=on]Yea, General Motors!!!! You rock!!![/sarcasm]

Our friends over at DialIdol say that The Arch, Jen the Gelfling and the Country Girl are all safe. They predict SHBORS (my new name for David C.), Syesha and Carly as the lowest vote-getters with the rest statistically being in danger.

I can't say I disagree with that bottom 3 based on Tuesday's performances, but I don't know that they'd actually kick Carly or David C. off. Of course, lots of people though FRC would do better than 6^th and Chris D. would win.

• Ann and Nancy Wilson: All ass-kicking. All the time.
  
  
• Fergie. Not so much.
  
  
• Why did Miley Cyrus get two songs? And is she 15 or 23 and working at Divas International?
  
  
• They needed more past Idols singing live.
  
  
• I didn't hear it live and my DVR cut the ending off the show, but did the Arch flub some of the lyrics on his part of "Shout to the Lord"?

After last week's marathon column, I think I'm just going to do a straight live-blog of the results show tonight from here on out (Mrs. High Lord wants me to make a ringtone out of the aforemetioned "Seasons of Love", so I'm going to be messing around with my Rent .mp3s).

So here we go . . .

Last year, no one was kicked off on IGB week, but this year, they're kicking someone to the curb on the night after. We get the obligatory recap of IGB, not the singing show.

4/10: A new measurement tool Stamps! And Idol
Gives Back ratings

Rather than sandwich Josh Gracin’s interview in between Idol Gives Back and the results show blog entries, I’ll hold off until tomorrow.

But I got an interesting email from TiVo that predicts Syesha Mercado (above) is a goner tonight based on how many times a particular performance was watched in time-shifted form. Here’s the press release:

TiVo Inc. announced today a prediction of the “American Idol” contestant most likely to be voted off the show in this week’s eliminations. For past four weeks, TiVo has been using its second-by-second audience measurement to determine which performers had the highest and lowest viewership. It turns out, this information, especially among viewers who are watching on a timeshifted basis, is highly predictive of which contestant will be voted off. Viewers tend to rewind and watch their favorite performances multiple times, while fast-forwarding through the ones they don’t like. These viewing preferences correlate with voting patterns (for each week TiVo has measured). As always, the viewing information was collected in strict accordance to TiVo’s privacy policy, which uses a sample of completely anonymous data from 20,000 random anonymous subscribers, analyzed only in on an aggregated basis.

David Archuleta ranked in the highest audience numbers during his performance.

Syesha Mercado was the lowest on the totem pole this week, with the fewest viewers sticking around for her performance. For the past 4 weeks running, the person with the lowest viewership as recorded by TiVo subscribers has been voted to go home.

Intriguing!

Paula Abdul on Q100 today said she’s really worried for Carly Smithson, who is clearly in the danger zone, too. Some folks think Brooke might join them and make it an all-female bottom three but could Michael Johns be in trouble, too?

-Usually postage stamps only feature dead people but Idol has convinced the U.S. Postal Service, desperate for attention, to sell “Idol” stamps with “Idol” winners. According to USA Today,, if the limited edition stamps sell out, that would be $7 million for “Idol Gives Back.”

The stamps are not being sold in post offices. They’re available online only at PhotoStamps or linked via AmericanIdol.com, a product of Stamps.com, which offers USPS-approved, Internet-based postage services.

-“Idol Gives Back” pulled in only about 70% of the regular audience, not a surprise. It averaged 17.6 million from 8 to 10 p.m. based on preliminary numbers. Last year, the show pulled in 26 million viewers but that was because there was a pretense of a results show.
